David graduated from the University of New Mexico School Of Law in 2001. He then served as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Vanessa Ruiz of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. In 2002, Mr. Urias joined the firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, LLP, in New York City, where he practiced corporate and commercial litigation. At Fried Frank, David received the firm’s Pro Bono award in 2004, primarily in recognition of his representation of families of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks and his work on an amicus brief to the United States Supreme Court in the affirmative action case, Grutter v. Bollinger, 539 U.S. 306 (2003).
In 2004, David became a staff attorney for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), the largest and most prominent Latino legal organization in the nation. At MALDEF, David practiced in all areas of civil rights law, including voting rights, class action and collective action employment matters, immigrant rights, and education law. During his tenure at MALDEF, David practiced before numerous state and federal district courts and the Supreme Court of the United States. He and other counsel at MALDEF represented the GI Forum in Lulac v.. Perry,548 U.S. 399 (2006) a case in which the Supreme Court invalidated a congressional district that was redrawn by the Texas legislature in an attempt to dilute Latino voting strength in south and west Texas. David also successfully represented Latino schoolchildren and their parents in a school segregation case in Dallas, Texas; Latino immigrants assaulted by vigilante ranchers in Arizona as part of a racially motivated conspiracy; teenage boys removed from school by Albuquerque police so that they could be interrogated immigration officials; and eighty eight Latino workers in a class action employment case against a Houston manufacturing plant that segregated its workforce into Latino and non-Latino departments.
Mr. Urias joined the firm in June, 2008, and practices civil rights law, election law, antitrust and class action law.
